Young Missionary Temple C.M.E. Church started out as Young’s Chapel C.M.E. Church, which many called Cotton Street Church, was organized and built in 1916 under the leadership of the late Reverend Young. The members were small in number, but large in spirit. The building during this time was a one-room structure facing Cotton Street. Many pastors have served faithfully during the years that followed. Through the dedication of the members and pastors, the Sunday School Annex was added on in 1954. Under the leadership of Reverend J.N. Leverette, the Sanctuary was rebuilt and completed in 1956. After the construction of the building, the church then faced State Street and the name of the church was changed to Young Missionary Temple C.M.E. Church. Under the leadership of Reverend Frank T. White, the church held service in the new edifice on 2901 Sanderford Road. July 2004 marked a new beginning for Young Missionary Temple C.M.E. Church with its 35th pastor named, Reverend Edward E. Thomas. The motto for the church is “ "Moving From Membership To Disciple Ship." The church mission statement: "The Young Missionary Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church family recognizes itself as a part of the Body of Christ whose purpose is to Go into all the world and make disciples of all people, to illustrate God's Glory, to bring people to Christ and to teach and equip them for ministry so that they may grow from members to disciples."
